These ceramic earspools are formed from hand-dug clay gathered on ancestral Caddo land in present-day Texas, connecting them to both land and history. Before shaping them, the artist studied archaeological accounts of ancient Caddo earspools. Guided by photographs and illustrations of these historic pieces, the artist created a present-day continuation of Caddo earspool traditions.
After being shaped and allowed to dry, each earspool was burnished with a smooth stone, giving it a polished sheen. They were then fired in an open-ground fire. A basket-weave motif, commonly found in ancient Caddo art, was etched onto the surface.
