Drawing, Graphics & Mixed Media

Deer Lady gently cradles a Fawn while holding her broken antler as a warning to those who mean to harm them. The Doe stands behind Deer Lady for protection, trusting her with her Fawn. Deer Lady wears a purple Cherokee tiered dress decorated with red, black, and gold ribbons. Purple symbolizes domestic violence awareness, red for MMIP awareness, gold for the celebration and sacredness of new life and a bright future, and black to honor lives lost. They are surrounded by a Southeastern Conifer Savannah Forest, with grasses, shrubs, berries, a Blood Moon, and the Milky Way (Path of Souls).

About the Artist

Mary Lupton

Cherokee Nation

Mary Lupton (Cherokee Nation) is a contemporary Cherokee painter and digital artist from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, who has been creating art since early childhood. After earning a multidisciplinary studies degree with a minor in electrical engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 2023, Lupton currently pursues her passion as an artist.

Nature, space, and human figures are the focus of much of her work. She integrates Cherokee and Southeastern Mississippian themes to tell abstract and vibrant stories about the world around us. She strives to preserve and continue her cultural heritage while moving and inspiring others in ways that words cannot always express.

Lupton illustrated “Spirit Shadow” by Ginger Reno and serves as president of the Southeastern Indian Artists Association for the 2025-2026 term. Her recent awards include first place in Drawing and first place in Digital Art at the 2025 Hushtola Art Market, third place in Photography & Digital Arts at the 2025 Cherokee Art Market, second place in Painting at the 2025 Cherokee National Holiday Art Show, a merit award for Painting at the 2025 Cherokee Homecoming Art Show and an honorable mention in Painting at the 2024 Trail of Tears Art Show.
