About the Artist

Patrick Knowles

Cherokee Nation

Patrick Knowles is a traditional Cherokee artist specializing in several different mediums. Patrick has lived on the Cherokee reservation in Locust Grove, Oklahoma his entire life and has always been inspired by Cherokee traditions and artwork. Patrick has always had a passion for Cherokee culture, at the early age of 10 he had already taught himself how to make pucker-toe moccasins and arrowheads.    Taking inspiration from his everyday surroundings in nature and his vast love and knowledge for Cherokee history, Patrick creates a multitude of traditional Cherokee material culture such as beaded clothing and moccasins, long stemmed calumet pipes, bear claw necklaces, painted hide robes and a variety of other items you would have seen in everyday Cherokee life in the 18th and 19th centuries.   Patrick has created two full length cherokee men's outfits from the 18th and 19th centuries using only period correct technique, design and materials.   Patrick only uses traditional materials that would have been found in those time periods such as smoked brain-tanned deerskin, antique beads, real deer sinew, hand dyed stroud wool, and many other materials that are hard to find.
