Depending on Each Other: Three Sisters
Charlie Nichols
Sculpture
This carving depicts the Cherokee legend of the "Three Sisters." Corn, beans and squash represent three inseparable spirits working together. Planted together, each helps the other.
The eldest sister, corn, stands tall, providing a pole for the middle sister, beans, to climb on.
The middle sister, beans, converts nitrogen in the air to nitrates, a natural fertilizer for the soil.
The youngest sister, squash, provides ground cover. The ground cover helps the soil retain moisture and helps deter weeds.
These "Three Sisters" are planted together, and each helps the others. They are stronger together, as sisters are!
