Man in a Coffin

Merit

Category: Basketry: Traditional

A river cane basket, hand split, peeled and dyed by the weaver, with madder root and walnut as the dye. The design is called "man in the coffin." The all-cane rim is a return to an old style of rim used before the Cherokee began using hickory and oak. It was replaced by cane lashed with hickory inner bark and then oak, rim-lashed with hickory.
