This gorget brings together the Cherokee story of why the crow is black with the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. The theme reflects the purpose of gorgets, worn to protect warriors in battle, and honors the crow's bravery in Cherokee tradition as it risked itself to bring fire to the Cherokee people. Crows are a presence throughout the Pacific Northwest, while the cedar trees depicted in the design hold cultural and medicinal significance in Cherokee tradition. The gorget is edged with copper beads, honoring copper's cultural significance. Together, these elements connect my Cherokee heritage with the place I call home.
