They Carry the Land

Adrienne Keene

Basketry

As a mentor rider for the 2026 Remember the Removal Ride, I have spent the last several months tracing rural roads of the reservation on my bike. After my first flat tire, I became interested in discarded rubber inner tubes. I think about the ways these tires have rolled across our homelands with each pedal stroke, and the ways the land is then carried into the tire, and now into the weaving. As I ride on RTR this June, I will be thinking about the ways my bike is carrying the land of the Trail of Tears with me as I journey back to Oklahoma following the route of our ancestors.

2026, Rubber bicycle inner tubes, copper tubing, copper wire.
