Double-sided oblique fingerweaving, dyed and partially felted.

Many Indigenous cultures affectionately refer to North America as “Turtle Island” because of various origin stories about the continent forming on the back of a huge turtle. This idea of treating and cultivating the land as a living creature lends itself to a deep respect for our environment and a connection to this place we call home.

About the Artist

Karen Berry

Cherokee Nation

Karen Berry is a Cherokee Nation citizen who grew up in Texas and currently resides in Garland, Texas. Berry learned about Cherokee culture and art through her mother, Cherokee National Treasure Martha Berry, who revived the tradition of Cherokee beadwork. Karen incorporates pre-European contact and modern Cherokee designs into her work. She fell in love with gourd art through her history of woodworking and painting. This medium was a natural progression that combined these talents.

She began to practice fingerweaving in 2012, in the style typically done by Southeastern Woodland tribes during the 18th century. Together with other weavers, she has helped lead a revival of this traditional style within the Cherokee Nation. She also has revived the practice of creating bandolier bags using this technique.
