Paige Hart

This scarf, hand-woven using a rigid heddle loom, was inspired by the 1839 Act of Union, which paved the way for ratification of a new Constitution and reunified the Cherokee people after the division and sorrow resulting from removal. Though challenges would lie ahead, the Act of Union signified healing and hope of moving forward as a unified nation. The black threads represent the 17 Western Cherokee signers, and the white threads represent the 16 Eastern Cherokee signers — with two threads per signer. Though they look divided, the yellow threads show they are woven together by shared culture and heritage.

About the Artist

Paige Hart

Cherokee Nation

Born and raised in south-central Oklahoma, Paige Hart is a Cherokee artist who focuses on textiles and fiber arts. Hart values the importance of carrying on arts like weaving, which has been practiced by Cherokee people in various forms throughout time. She integrates her heritage into her designs by incorporating colors, symbols, history and other concepts significant to Southeastern Woodlands culture.

Hart is a first-generation college graduate with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a Master of Science in program evaluation and data analytics. Weaving is her artistic outlet after her day job as a research analyst. When not in front of her desk or her loom, she enjoys spending time with her cats and her husband, who is also an Indigenous artist. 

As a beginning weaver, Hart is excited to grow and learn as an artist. She hopes to continue her journey of connecting to and highlighting her heritage by sharing her work in many markets, exhibits, and art shows in the near future.
