Cherokees kept seeds in a seed pot with a small opening to keep out mice. Seeds and the number 3 are etched around the opening. 

The tale of the three sisters — corn, beans and squash — is an origin story of companion agriculture.  It teaches that the three plants must be grown together because they physically and spiritually nourish one another, functioning much like sisters caring for family.
